FAQ

Freight Questions,
Answered Straight.

What’s the difference between LTL and FTL freight?
LTL (less-than-truckload) means your freight shares a trailer with other shipments — you pay for the space and weight you use, ideal for roughly 1–6 pallets or loads under about 15,000 lb. FTL (full truckload) dedicates a whole trailer to your freight: faster, handled once, and usually better value once you’re filling most of a 53-ft trailer. Not sure which fits? Our freight calculator gives you a read in seconds, or we’ll quote both.
How is freight class calculated?
For most freight, class comes from density — weight divided by cubic feet (length × width × height ÷ 1,728 per piece). Higher density means a lower class and lower cost. A few commodities carry a fixed class regardless of density. Get your estimated NMFC class instantly with our freight class calculator.
What does cross-border shipping between Canada and the US cost?
There’s no flat answer — cross-border rates depend on the lane, equipment (LTL vs FTL; dry van, reefer or flatbed), weight and density, fuel, the CAD/USD exchange rate, and border wait times. What we do differently is bring live market data on your specific corridor to the quote, so the number is benchmarked, not guessed. Send us the lane and we’ll come back within 24 hours.
How long does it take to cross the Canada–US border?
It varies by crossing and time of day. We watch live border wait times at the BC crossings we run most — Peace Arch, Pacific Highway and Sumas — and route around congestion. Clean paperwork and a FAST-certified carrier are the two biggest levers on getting through quickly.
What is a FAST lane, and do I need one?
FAST (Free and Secure Trade) is a pre-approved program that gives certified carriers and drivers an expedited lane at the border. It isn’t mandatory, but on busy commercial crossings it can save meaningful time. We work with FAST-certified capacity so it’s there when your freight benefits from it.
What areas does Freight Alpha serve?
We’re BC-based and specialize in cross-border Canada–USA freight and Canadian domestic moves, with a focus on the Pacific Northwest corridor. We handle LTL and FTL, plus reefer, flatbed and specialized equipment. If you’re moving freight into or out of Western Canada or across the BC/Washington border, that’s our lane.
What’s the no-risk first load offer?
Two loads, no contract, no setup fees, no commitment. It’s how we’d rather earn your business — you see exactly how we communicate, quote and execute before you decide anything. If we don’t deliver, you keep your current setup and you’ve lost nothing.
What do you need to give me a quote?
The basics: origin and destination (city + province/state), what you’re shipping, approximate weight and pallet count, and how often it moves. Rough numbers are fine to start — our calculator helps you nail down class and deck space, and we’ll confirm the rest on a quick call.
